Especially in a time of profound social change, increasing uncertainty and growing tensions, preserving our art and culture is of fundamental importance. They are far more than entertainment or tradition \u2013 they are an expression of our values, our history and our shared sense of identity.<\/p>\r\n

Konrad Adenauer summed it up aptly:\r\n
\u201cArt and culture are the noblest expression of the human spirit and a national asset worthy of protection.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

This statement is more relevant than ever. Art and culture provide orientation, shape identity and enable understanding across borders. They strengthen social cohesion and remind us what we stand for \u2013 as a community, as a democracy and as an open society.<\/p>\r\n

Especially now, it is our shared responsibility to preserve, support and make art and culture visible. For those who protect their culture also protect the future of their society.<\/p>\r\n

Thomas Boger is one of Germany\u2019s most versatile conductors in the field of symphonic wind orchestras and cross-genre concert formats. His musical work combines artistic precision with emotional expression and an exceptional stylistic range \u2013 from classical and film music to musical theatre, jazz and pop-rock, as well as historically informed performance practice.<\/p>\r\n

For more than 15 years, he shaped the artistic profile of the Orchestra of the State of Lower Saxony as Chief Conductor, developing the ensemble into a highly regarded orchestra with a reputation extending far beyond the region. In collaboration with NDR, this period included live concert recordings, CD productions and radio broadcasts. He subsequently served for two years as Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Orchestra of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, where he introduced new musical and conceptual ideas, particularly in the fields of contemporary concert formats and cross-genre projects.<\/p>\r\n

As a guest conductor and lecturer, Thomas Boger regularly works with renowned orchestras and ensembles, including the Bavarian Police Orchestra, the Federal Police Orchestra Hannover, Army Band 1 and the Junge Bl\u00e4serphilharmonie North Rhine-Westphalia. In recent years, particularly notable projects have included collaborations with artists such as Markus Becker, Chris Day, Oliver Mascarenhas, Rupprecht Drees, Maricel W\u00f6lk, Rainbirds, Terry Hoax, Oliver Perau and Shereen Adam.<\/p>\r\n

Thomas Boger\u2019s broad musical range is also reflected in his many years of work as a trumpeter with numerous ensembles and orchestras specialising in early music. His engagements included the M\u00fcnchener Kammerorchester, G\u00f6ttinger Barockorchester, La Stagione Frankfurt, L\u2019Arco Hannover, Concerto Brandenburg, Bremer Ratsmusik and Bach Consort Leipzig. In addition, he performed for many years with the orchestra of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival under numerous internationally renowned conductors.<\/p>\r\n

Thomas Boger was born in Pforzheim in 1970. He studied trumpet at the University of the Arts Bremen with Professor Otto Sauter and at the University of Music Detmold with Professor Max Sommerhalder. Further important artistic influences came from private studies with Bo Nilsson and Pierre Thibaud.\nHis development as a conductor was shaped by Douglas Bostock, Maurice Hamers and Jan Cober, among others, and in particular by his long-term studies with Pierre Kuijpers at the Maastricht Conservatory.<\/p>\r\n

Today, Thomas Boger\u2019s work stands for innovative concert formats, emotionally compelling sound worlds and musical versatility. His concerts combine the symphonic tradition with contemporary concert dramaturgy, creating musical experiences that reach audiences across generations.<\/p>\r\n

The Orchestra of the State of Lower Saxony, under the inspiring direction of Thomas Boger, presented a sensational concert of symphonic wind music. One of the absolute highlights was Artie Shaw\u2019s Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra. The American jazz clarinettist, arranger, composer, bandleader and author was represented by soloist Yoshitaka Sumita, who performed the highly virtuosic jazz part with elegance and tonal refinement. The orchestra accompanied him with great assurance through the rhythmically demanding passages under Thomas Boger\u2019s profound direction. <\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n

Johann Sebastian Bach\u2019s Passacaglia in C minor, BWV 582 is already a powerful work in its original organ version. Thomas Boger arranged it for his orchestra, preserving its sonic force while giving it clearly sculpted contours as themes and motifs pass through the different sections of the ensemble in a kind of antiphonal interplay. In this interpretation, Bach\u2019s music takes on an immense richness of colour and a sweeping, almost Romantic expressive power.<\/p>\r\n

After a tension-filled introduction, the musicians brought an exuberant wildness to Edvard Grieg\u2019s Norwegian Dance No. 4, while the central section unfolded with the natural, lyrical poetry of flutes and clarinets. In John Barnes Chance\u2019s Variations on a Korean Folk Song, the orchestra once again impressed with refinement of sound, orchestral virtuosity and the brilliance of its solo passages.<\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n

The acoustics of St. Trinitatis Church and the sound of the Orchestra of the State of Lower Saxony complement each other perfectly. This was already evident in the opening work, Johann Sebastian Bach\u2019s Toccata and Fugue in D minor in an arrangement for wind orchestra. In the fugue, the players demonstrated remarkable polyphonic transparency. Flutes, oboes and clarinets engaged in a sensitive dialogue with the brass before bringing the popular work to a powerful tutti conclusion.\nEdvard Grieg\u2019s Peer Gynt Suite likewise revealed contrasts of light and shade, delicate moments and almost brutally concentrated bursts of sound. Thomas Boger maintained a finely judged balance between the sections throughout. In Morning Mood, a gentle Nordic day seemed to unfold, growing dynamically through the full orchestra into the radiant beauty of a vivid natural landscape.\nFrom the mystical and solemn atmosphere of The Death of \u00c5se and the graceful rhythm of Anitra\u2019s Dance, the performance then moved into the full dramatic force of the orchestra, supported by a virtuosic percussion section and delivered with tremendous impact. <\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n

With an exceptional programme, the Orchestra of the State of Lower Saxony under the direction of Thomas Boger once again demonstrated why it is so highly regarded in the city of Lessing. St. Trinitatis Church proved to be an outstanding venue for the powerfully performing ensemble. Free from the excessive reverberation that can so often be problematic, the immense sonorities were able to unfold throughout the sacred space, while even the quietest passages retained their intimacy.\nComposers such as Thiemo Krass weave precisely this kind of atmosphere into their music. He calls his tone painting Imagasy \u2013 a coined title combining \u201cimagination\u201d and \u201cfantasy\u201d. The musicians carry their audience into a dream world full of shimmering colours. The percussion sets out a muted pulse, the orchestra expands into broad sonic planes, searching for its theme, before a hymn-like melody emerges with growing intensity and eventually culminates in powerful climaxes.\nBoger resists the obvious temptation to impress his audience through sheer volume alone. Instead, he repeatedly creates moments of atmosphere and refinement, as in the Angel\u2019s Trio from Mendelssohn\u2019s Elijah. Above a spiritually charged soundscape shaped with great effect by trombones and trumpets, flutes and clarinets merge into an enchanting song-like line, almost comparable to the human voice. <\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n

The second edition once again fully achieved its aim. Older people, middle-aged audiences and younger generations alike clearly enjoyed themselves just as much as the artists on stage.\nUnder the direction of Thomas Boger, the Orchestra of the State of Lower Saxony impressed at times with sophisticated jazz arrangements and at others with the suitably expansive sound of John Miles\u2019 pop anthem Music. Boger consistently gave his soloists the space to showcase their individual strengths.\nTogether with the bands, the orchestra formed a genuine musical symbiosis.
